"When Commissaire Adamsberg, the chief of police in Paris's 7th Arrondissement, is called to the scene of a ghastly and highly unusual murder, he thinks it can't have anything to do with the nine pairs of shoes and severed feet discovered outside of London's Highgate Cemetery just a few days earlier. With the help of the murdered man's gifted physician, Adamsberg delves into the victim's disturbed psyche and unexpectedly finds himself on a path that takes him deep into the haunted past of Eastern Europe, where a centuries-old horror has come to life and is claiming victims far and wide. As Adamsberg circles closer to the truth, it becomes clear that someone on the inside wants to shut down the investigation, no matter the cost"--… (more)

Pseudonym of historian and archaeologist Frédérique Audoin-Rouzeau. Parisian Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, in London for a conference, finds himself reluctantly involved in a macabre case that begins with nine pairs of shoes and severed feet left at Highgate Cemetery. Police procedural. Didn't really hook me.Probably shouldn't rate it since I quit on it, but I was more than halfway through, and 2.5 seems about right. ( )

What is the connection between feet detached from their bodies found at Highgate Cemetary, and some particularly grisly murders in Paris and Vienna? And is someone trying to frame Adamsberg for them?

Very enjoyable, full of twists and turns. But can we have a break from the mysterious figures from Adamsberg's past? ( )

Piacevole come sempre.

A great slow read. I've enjoyed or do much that I've read it three times. Tension, character, plot all gripping. You want to hang out with these people.

A nice Gallic counterpart to Christopher Fowler's very English "Peculiar Crimes Unit" series, which also hints at the supernatural and stars eccentric sleuths. Readers should suspend their disbelief at Vargas's dizzying array of plot twists and coincidences and just enjoy the roller-coaster ride. Great fun!

Book description
Commissaire Adamsberg leaves Paris for a three-day conference in London. Accompanying him are Estalere, a young sergeant, and Commandant Danglard, who is terrified at the idea of traveling beneath the Channel. It is a welcome change of scenery, until a macabre and brutal case comes to the attention of their colleague Radstock from New Scotland Yard.

Just outside the gates of the baroque Highgate Cemetery, a pile of shoes is found. Not so strange in itself, but the shoes contain severed feet. As Scotland Yard's investigation begins, Adamsberg and his colleagues return home and are confronted with a massacre in a suburban house. Adamsberg and Danglard are drawn in to a trail of vampires and vampire-hunters that leads them all the way to Serbia, a place where the old certainties no longer apply.
