Impeccable scholarship and lavish illustration mark this landmark study of American railroad folksong. Norm Cohen provides a sweeping discussion of the human aspects of railroad history, railroad folklore, and the evolution of the American folksong. The heart of the book is a detailed analysis of eighty-five songs, from "John Henry" and "The Wabash Cannonball" to "Hell-Bound Train" and "Casey Jones," with their music, sources, history, and variations, and discographies. Very interesting concept for a book. It's history, ethnography, musicology and a discography all rolled into one. If you're interested in railroading and music, find a copy. ( )

First words
Preface
======

This book is the result of a project that began nearly fifteen years ago at the suggestion of Richard E. Lingenfelter.
Introduction to the Second Edition
======

In 1973 one of our best contemporary folksong writers, Bruce "Utah" Phillips, recorded "Daddy, What's a Train" in which he lamented the passing of the steam engines that he loved so much and speculated that in another generation youngsters would be as unfamiliar with trains as we now are with covered wagons.
