The unique and fascinating life of Talleyrand's niece, Dorothea Courland, Duchess of Dino, will grab readers' attention and hold it fast. This first English-language biography of the Duchess paints a portrait of an intelligent, strikingly beautiful, proud, and ferociously loyal woman. She served as Talleyrand's constant companion, taking on some of his social and political burdens when he grew too old to bear them alone. Talleyrand was even assumed to have been the father of her last child. This is a gripping character study of one of the most influential women of the 19th century.… (more)

Book description
A biography of a woman considered one of the grandmothers of European aristocracy. The alluring Dorothea (or Dorothée) von Biron, Princess of Courlande, known to history as the Duchess of Dino, was a wealthy, German-born noblewoman. In 1809, the wily French statesman Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, Prince de Talleyrand, arranged her marriage to his nephew, Count Edmond de Périgord. Talleyrand took Dorothea with him to the Congress of Vienna in 1814 as his official hostess, and it is believed that they became lovers. They lived together until his death. Talleyrand gave the duchy of Dino, awarded to him for his services, to his nephew and so Dorothea became Duchess of Dino and later Duchess of Sagan.
