Roman emperors, Arab scholars, and early travellers were already drawn to and enchanted by the fascination of the land along the Nile. The pyramids of Giza, the temple-city of Karnak, or the Valley of the Kings with the grave of Tutankhamen even today maintain their extraordinary force of attraction. Across the centuries the high culture of the ancient Egyptians has retained its allure. This can certainly be attributed to their astounding architectural, artistic, and technological achievements as well as their high level of writing and literature. The unified world view of old Egypt, in which science and religion are an indissoluble unity, impresses us deeply, as well. This book explores all the magic and mysteries of ancient Egypt that continue to fascinate us, in over 500 pages of full-colour photographs and comprehensive text. It covers everything from architecture, sculpture and painting to everyday life, statecraft, society and religion.… (more)

This is one hefty hardback tome (not recommended for the beach or taking on holiday), a 'coffee-table' type book and is totally packed with everything you wish to know about this fascinating subject. ( )

The illustrations alone make this worth the purchase price—numerous, high quality and glossy. It'd be good as a coffee table book, but the individual essays are also well worth the read. Each is written by a different expert in that particular field, and although the style of the chapters therefore varies quite a bit, all are scholarly and readable. A good introduction to the subject which still offers something to the more knowledgeable reader. ( )
