Attempting to complete a global survey of the history of Rome from its legendary foundation in 753 BC through the Republican and Imperial period is a daunting task. Even more so in this work, which is relatively brief considering the immense volume of information that could be covered.

The author attempts to cover only the more well known events and persons at the expense of much missing and interesting detail. Truly, books have been written on far more specific topics, e.g., the Punic Wars, the rise and fall of the Republic, the age of emperors, etc.

For those looking for the most general overview, this book is a decent start. For those with more specialized knowledge, better to look elsewhere. ( )
