Without a doubt, this is my favorite Anne Rice novel. It is refreshingly different and offers a unique twist to the usual mummy story. Perhaps my favorite element of the tale is the rich atmosphere Ms. Rice brings to Edwardian London and Egypt. The characters are well-drawn and believable and easily pull the reader in. The twist to the usual mummy tale creates a different sort of horror than the stereotypical shambling monster of golden-age Hollywood. I have to say I officially can not wait to read the sequel! ( )

First Review: Overall, I really liked this book.
I would have given it a full 5/5 stars, but there were quite a few parts - especially near the beginning and near the end - where I was reading confused.
I personally liked most of the characters, who at first seemed like the normal stereotypes for similar characters, but they eventually showed themselves to be more than the stereotypes.
I did really like the plot line as well, but there were quite a few parts where I felt like the story wasn’t going anywhere and not really progressing.
Second Review: So upon reading this book for a second time, I still enjoyed the overall plot line. The characters still really annoyed me in general. I think Anne Rice did a good job in world building, but character development was iffy with most of the characters (most of them went downhill rather than having any real/good development, in my opinion). Anne Rice has stated she wants book reviewers to be required to post with their full, real name. In response, I am removing all my reviews of her novels as I am unable and unwilling to do this. I am no longer comfortable reading or reviewing her work. Thank you.

Hmmmm...
Ramses the Great (or Ramses the Damned) is discovered in The Valley of the Kings. He has risen from the his immortal sleep to fall in love with Julie. But when people start turning up dead Ramses raises the seductive Cleopatra from her grave.
Um... Ok. So I read this in October as a good monster read. Unfortunately I didn't really get that. I have a few problems with this book.
First off (and foremost I think) this is not a horror book by any means. I hate to compare this book to her others but unfortunately here I must do so. This is more of a paranormal romance which I was not expecting at all. Although I did like the romance between Ramses and Julie, I have to say the sex scenes were completely rushed and having a very wham bam thank you ma'am sort of feel to them. Which is not usual for Anne Rice who definitely knows how to write a good sex scene.
The characters don't seem to be fleshed out enough. They just seemed very one-dimensional to me with not a lot of background to them at all. It also made it very difficult for me to connect with the characters or two relate to the main character Julie at all.
The main storylines were okay but there are so many little story lines and subplots that are going on that really have no sway on the main storylines and it seems they are almost there just to confuse you, of which they do a very good job in that respect.
Everything considered, not her best work at all. Sadness. I am hoping that her wolf series will be better.
Can't say I'd really recommend this one. ( )

There is no question about Rice losing any fans with this lightsome, almost chirpily horrorless horror romance: she won't.
