Wonderfully vivid tale of a man who loses 20 years of his life overnight in the Catskill Mountains. Irving is a delightful narrator, who employs some irony and humor along with his powerful sense of place, to enthrall his reader.

I had, of course, read this long ago in my youth. I found it was a bit different than I had remembered and well worth taking the time to read again. ( )

Rip Van Winkle is an entertaining adaptation of a folk tale but unfortunately the other short stories in the book were simply too boring and uninteresting for me.... ( )

If you've never gotten to know lazy old Rip, do so! It's a great little story.

[The following Tale was found among the papers of the late Diedrich Knickerbocker, an old gentleman of New York, who was curious in the Dutch history of the province, and the manners of the descendants from its primitive settlers. His historical researches, however, did not lie so much among books as among men; for the former are lamentably scanty on his favorite topics; whereas he found the old burghers, and still more their wives, rich in that legendary lore, so invaluable to true history. . . .]

Book description
In this adaptation of Washington Irving's beloved story, acclaimed painter Thomas Locker takes one of America's favorite legends and weaves in the beauty of the rugged Catskill Mountains. Rip Van Winkle, a poor farmer, is out hunting one day when he comes upon a strange company of men playing ninepins. When Rip samples their brew, he falls into a deep sleep for 20 years, eventually awaking bearded and gray in a vastly changed world. This classic tale is enhanced with the unique artistry of Locker, who has made more than 20 trips to the Catskills to study and paint the magnificent landscape in which the story is set.
