5438. Presidential Campaigns, by Paul F. Boller, Jr. (read 30 Jan 2017). This is a 1984 book by a Texas Christian U. historian which gives an account of every American Presidential campaign from Washington up through 1980. The accounts for the more recent campaigns are a bit longer than for the longer ago ones but one comes away from each account feeling that it has been accurately summarized--even though I sometimes thought I was not being told too much new. There are a lot of footnotes but of course they refer to books published before 1984 so the accounts of some of the more recent campaigns are not inclusive of information which has come to light since. But I had the feeling that the highlights of each campaign were well told. And it was fun reading the book! ( )

Presidential campaigns have been mean and nasty lately, but the fact is they weren't very nice in the old days either.
