Es wird heute allgemein angenommen, daß die Neue Welt zum ersten Male zwischen etwa 25 000 und 15 000 v. Chr. von Menschen mongoloider Rasse betreten wurde und daß diese Menschen von Nordostasien her über die heutige Beringstraße, die in der letzten Eiszeit über viele Jahrtausende hinweg völlig trocken lag, in mehreren Wellen einwanderten. Einige abweichende Meinungen gehen dahin, daß vielleicht die frühesten Einwanderungen schon wesentlich früher, nämlich vor 40 000 und mehr Jahren stattgefunden haben könnten.
