This book, for me, is a rather difficult one to rate as I read it with such a different mindset, more than 20 years ago, now. I found it fascinating, exhilarating, and frightening all at once, as I questioned the direction my life should take back in the middle of my college studies, and in the process of leaving one faith for another. I spent 6 months, many many hours, and much ink in researching dates, references, concordances and languages with Edersheim. I came to different conclusions than he did, but respect his work greatly.

Edersheim, Alfred, The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah (Grand Rapids, MI: Wm.B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1990, 1883). [10295]
"The most important general work on the life of Christ in our language." -- Wilbur M. Smith
Considering the bibliophile that was Wilbur M. Smith (he had a personal library containing over 25,000 books) this is quite a statement. A dfinitive work of epic proportions. A MUST READ for the serious Christian. ( )

Edersheim impartially weighs all the facts and views of the life and teachings of Christ according to principles of historical inquiry. For such a task he vividly reconstructs that life and reaching in all its surroundings of place, society, popular life, and intellectual and religious development.
