No current Talk conversations about this book. had difficulty reading this - lovely language, well written, just not in the mood when attempting to complete it. Would probably have given it a much better, positive review if I'd attempted to read it at another time Imaginative version of Jesus' 40 days in the Wilderness [called herein a Quarantine.] While Jesus goes there to pray and to grow closer to God, there are 5 others: 3 men and 2 women, whose lives are touched by Jesus in some way. There is much literary license here. Beautifully written and vividly descriptive. Highly recommended. The words have a steady flowing rhythm - relaxing and hypnotic. Sometimes flowing with the action, sometimes a counterpoint. Really takes the reader into the story, into the world. A very satisfying read. A fascinating, richly textured, "alternative history"? It's difficult to classify this novel actually. 2000 years ago Judea is not a place I had ever thought much about aside from Biblical stories. This novel brings the time and place to life through real people-- very well done characters in fact. I especially appreciated the time spent on women's lives. Jesus is a minor character and I won't spoil the ending, but it is very thought provoking. I'd love to discuss this novel with a devout Christian. Yep - the title is Quarantine! It's a novel telling of Jesus' 40 days of temptation in the wilderness. A Whitbread Novel of the Year, and a Booker Prize Finalist.
"Dazzling, gritty brilliance. This is a novel of scorching distinction" (Sunday Times) Under an endless and unforgiving sky, four travellers enter the Judean desert in search of redemption. Instead, amidst the barren rocks, they are met by a dangerous man, Musa, and fall under his dark influence. But there is a fervent, solitary figure also sharing their landscape, denying the temptations of his neighbours, and, ultimately, the needs of his own body. So begin forty days and nights in one of the most inhospitable terrains on earth. No library descriptions found. |
