Aspects of early years of Tasmanian history are documented through the personal papers and letters of a young lawyer from Devon who spent seven years in Hobart Town as a surveyor and magistrate. He also made substantial contributions as an explorer, artist and keen natural historian who identified a number of new species including the Tasmanian Devil and Tasmanian Tiger.
