Con Shirley Ann Field, Albert Finney, Rachel Roberts, Norman Rossington. * Nottingham: dongiovanni proletario e sfaticato, Arthur Seaton (Finney) ha una relazione con una donna sposata (Roberts), ma finisce con l'essere incastrato da una ragazza perbene (Field), scoprendosi un vile. Primo lungometraggio di Reisz e capostipite, assieme a I giovani arrabbiati di Richardson, del Free cinema Britannico. A una grande libertà di forma e struttura si accompagna uno spirito demistificante e uno sguardo analitico sulla società. Rispetto ai film dei colleghi, quello di Reisz sembra essere invecchiato meglio, per il suo umorismo caustico e per il suo ritmo da commedia brillante, in felice contrasto con il grigiore degli ambienti. Finney, che aveva debutttato lo stesso anno negli Sfasati, è irresistibile e sa cogliere tutte le sfumature del suo personaggio. Tratto dall'omonimo romanzo di Alan Sillitoe (adattato dall'autore) e fotografato da Freddie Francis. ( )
