The People of Pern is a compilation of portraits of Anne McCaffrey's most popular Pern characters and short blurbs on each from McCaffrey herself. The artist, Robin Wood, does a nice job of capturing the descriptions their creator provides. Most of Pern's people are shown against a monotone background, but a few favorites like Robinton, Sebell, Menolly, F'lar, and Lessa get lovely backdrops rich with detail that will please the diehard Pern fan. For example, Rocky and Diver in Menolly's portrait are shown clasping a rockmite and diving respectively.

For bonus points you can play Spot the 80's Actor as many of the characters are based on contemporary famous faces. McCaffrey notes suggesting this to Wood to save time when preparing the show more book. Unfortunately, some of McCaffrey's words don’t quite jive with Wood's paintings. Sharra, for example, is depicted as a classical beauty next to text which seems to detail a completely different face. The text was written after the portraits were completed, so one can't really lay too much blame on the Artist. Wood is obviously a fan of McCaffrey's wonderful books and her work shows it. show less
I love to imagine what characters look like while reading. But, it is also nice to see what the author imagined when he/she wrote the work. Anne McCaffrey worked with artist Robin Wood to bring her people of Pern to two-dimensional life. This book has dozens of full color portraits and many black and white sketches of major and minor characters throughout the Pern series. It is nice to see the diversity of people that McCaffrey populated her world with. Sadly, this is out of print but well worth finding on the used market!
A collection of portraits of the characters from Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels, lovingly and superbly rendered by artist Robin Wood. Each drawing or painting is paired with a short bio of the character. A must-read for any fan of Pern.
The paintings are absolutely beautiful; she's really captured the spirit of the characters. I particularly like the character analysis that accompanies each portrait. It adds a great depth to the understanding of the character. I'll use the commentary with students next time I get to teach Dragonsong.
Beautiful full-color plates illustrate the various characters of the Pern series. The portrait of Robinton in particular is a standout.
A nice accompaniment to my favorite series. Tells all about the people of Pern up to 1988
These illustrations perfectly capture how I thought the characters would look. I loved the small details in the pictures such as the artists name so perfectly integrated into the images.

Dedication
I would like do dedicate this book to all those who helped me.
Anne, without whom there would be no book, and also no Pern! Thank you for your warmth and support, and for your endless patience answering all those questi... (show all)ons, and working with me until we got everyone right.
Bill and Jody, for giving me my first chance to work with Anne, and for all your help with this project (especially the transcript).
Stan and Bev, for being willing to do this book.
David and Jean, my editors, for your help and understanding.
Stacia, Zack, Melody, Lee, Skip, Tay, Stephan, Leslie, Thanos, Gerri, Lovey, Jason and Elric, for posing for me.  Notably Stacia, "Miss Pern 1988," who posed for all but two of the females, and whose face appears (slightly altered) only as Corana; and Zach, who posed for most of the males, and is Brand.  Thank you all, I couldn't have done it without you.
Rhymer, Jim, Carol, Fritz, the Bungaloids and all the other fen that I have talked to at the conventions, for your enthusiasm and support, not to mention visits and meals when I was trapped in the studio.
And lastly, and most importantly, to my housemates, Elisa and Stephan, for putting up with long hours, my snappishness, the times that I got discouraged, and an apartment full of Grumtine, and returning stories, backrubs, and boundless faith in my abilities.  You kept me on an even keel, and I can't thank you enough.
Thank you, as well, to all of you who are buying this book. I hope you enjoy owning, reading and looking at it as mch as I enjoyed painting it- for I did truly enjoy it, all those fourteen-hour days notwithstanding. I think you, my cats thank you, and my landlord thanks you!
Have fun!
First words
In what started as a short story to improve the public image of the much maligned "dragon," I wrote "Weyr Search," set on a planet orbiting the sun Rukbat which I located on the National Geographic Star Map in the lower left ... (show all)hand corner.
