This book traces the fortunes of Jambi and Palembang, two interrelated kingdoms in southeast Sumatra during the 17th and 18th centuries, a period characterised by political and economic transformation. It makes an important contribution to our understanding of premodern Indonesia and will be of interest to historians, anthropologists and other 'Southeast Asianists'.
