De term of titel khan is wellicht van Tartaarse afkomst en betekent 'vorst'. Later krijgen de Mongoolse leiders de naam kan of kankan, wat opperhoofd der opperhoofden betekent. De Perzische koningen lieten zich ilkan noemen. Kortom, het is duidelijk dat khan duidt op de hoogste leider in functie. De bekendste khan onder hen was ongetwijfeld Djengis Khan.
Niets liet aanvankelijk vermoeden dat Djengis een van de grootste veldheren uit de geschiedenis zou worden. Hij was een bastaardkind en hij kende een moeilijke jeugd vol kommer en bespottingen. Maar Djengis had een onbreekbare wil om later clanleider te worden, zijn doorzettingsvermogen was fenomenaal.
Djengis Khan zou de schrik van het oosten worden...
