Kathleen_E: The first in a great trilogy by a wonderful author, The Stone Mage and the sea will be loved by fans of Harry Potter. It is a young adult book, but like Harry Potter is enjoyed by adults also. The main character, Sal, is a boy who, like Harry Potter, is thrust into great and dangerous events due to his parentage and his hidden ability for the magic of the change. On his way he must be schooled in his magic, make friends, mentors and learn many lessons the hard way! If you like J. K. Rowling, you will love Sean Williams!… (more)

I'm not going to bother seriously reviewing Harry Potter, so let's just get down to the one thing I noticed during this read (except for the fact that the older I get, the more horrified I'm becoming to the Dursley's treatment of Harry. I mean they're seriously starving him in this one? And Petunia tried to hit him with a fucking frying pan!? That's insane).

When Ginny send Harry the embarrassing Valentine's Day song I noticed two things: 1) that Draco Malfoy knows that she was the one who sent it, and 2) that he calls her GINNY when calling her out on it. Draco calls Crabbe and Goyle by their last names, he thinks Percy is named Peter, but somehow he knows Ginny enough to call her Ginny?

Yeah, you can't tell me Ginny and Draco aren't having secret "I hate Harry Potter"-meetings in the hallways late at night where they talk shit and/or gossip about him. I bet Draco helped Ginny write that stupid poem. I bet he was even more upset than Ginny that he didn't like it. I bet Draco and Ginny are secret BFFs that just pretend to hate each other in public.

I promise it's true. ( )

This is all so amazing. Why, just why haven't I read this sooner. I am honestly so looking forward to starting the third book. I need to read a book from the library first, but once I'll be reading the next book right after that ;; ( )

First sentence: Not for the first time, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive. Mr. Vernon Dursley had been woken in the early hours of the morning by a loud, hooting noise from his nephew Harry's room.

Premise/plot: Harry Potter is being held captive by his aunt and uncle. He's "forbidden" to continue his studies at Hogwarts. For better or worse, he's "rescued" via flying car driven by a Weasley sibling. [This scene where he's passing all his stuff through the window to a waiting car reminded me of a scene where someone is escaping a cult]. After a lovely time with the Weasleys, time at last to buy supplies for school and head off for Hogwarts for their second year. But...Ron and Harry miss the train. For better or worse, flying car to the "rescue." These two cause quite the disturbance on their way to school....

Ginny Weasley, Harry Potter's biggest fan???, is joining her big brother at Hogwarts.

This school year has its ups and downs. A 'monster' from a secret chamber is terrorizing students and staff. No one knows for sure who is responsible--though Hermione, Harry, and Ron have their suspicions. (But I don't think any of them guessed accurately...)

My thoughts: I enjoyed this one more than the first book. I enjoyed the mystery. I enjoyed the ghosts. I enjoyed the reveals of character's backstories. It was packed with action. It didn't seem so info-dumpy. ( )

The atmosphere Rowling creates is unique; the story whizzes along; Harry is an unassuming and completely sympathetic hero. But, truth to tell, you may feel as if you’ve read it all before. Rowling clearly hit on a winning formula with the first Harry Potter book; the second book — though still great fun — feels a tad, well, formulaic.

Epigraph
Dedication
For Seán P. F. Harris, getaway driver and foul-weather friend.
First words
Not for the first time, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive.
Quotations
"My dear boy, ... do use your common sense. My books wouldn't have sold half as well if people didn't think I'd done those things. No one wants to read about some ugly old Armenian warlock, even if he did save a village from werewolves. He'd look dreadful on the front cover. No dress sense at all. And the witch who banished the Bandon Banshee had a hairy chin. I mean, come on ..."
"So you've just been taking credit for what a load of other people have done?"
"Harry, Harry," said Lockhart, shaking his head impatiently, "It's not nearly as simple as that. There was work involved. I had to track those people down. Ask them exactly how they managed to do what they did. ^Then I had to put a memory charm on them so they wouldn't remember doing it.^
... No, it's been a lot of work, Harry. It's not all book-signings and publicity photos, you know. You want fame, you have to be prepared for a long hard slog."
Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain.

Book description
Ever since Harry Potter had come home for the summer, the Dursleys had been so mean and hideous that all Harry wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he’s packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange impish creature who says that if Harry returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor and a spirit who haunts the girls’ bathroom. But then the real trouble begins – someone is turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possible be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects… Harry Potter himself!
Haiku summary

Won’t go there again.
