This White Paper sets out the proposed measures to reform the system for immigration, asylum and citizenship including: 1) a requirement for applicants to demonstrate a knowledge of English and citizenship education; the introduction of a citizenship ceremony as part of the naturalisation process which will include a citizenship pledge 2) measures to enable certain migrants to work in the UK to meet gaps in the labour market; 3) a system of induction, accommodation, reporting and removal centres to manage the entire asylum process; a registration card for asylum seekers to prove identity; the phasing out of the voucher system; streamlining of the appeals process; and measures to aid refugees who have been granted asylum to be integrated into the community 4) measures to combat people trafficking, illegal entry and illegal working: including a new offence of trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation with a penalty of 14 years; 5) the strengthening of border controls including the introduction of biometrics technology such as iris or facial recognition; 6) measures regarding marriage and family visits including increasing the probationary period for leave to remain on the basis of marriage to two years 7) strengthening immigration rules and improving co-ordination between agencies to deal with war criminals.… (more)
