This is an excellent introductory textbook, both well-written and covering a wide range of topics appropriate for an introductory linguistics course-- more than can probably be covered in a survey course, in fact. I've also had experience with Ohio State's Language Files intro textbook, and I found this book both explanatorily and stylistically better, with better practice exercises as well. Finally, the existence of a Canadian edition of this textbook is a wonderful thing, given the market generally trends either American or British, and Canadian English of course is neither. ( )

First words
The third edition of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis has been updated and modified to reflect changes in the discipline as well as comments from faculty and students who used the second edition.
Thanks to the application of rigorous analysis to familiar subject matter, linguistics provides students with an ideal introduction to the kind of thinking we call 'scientific'.
Language is many things—a system of communication, a medium for thought, a vehicle for literary expression, a social institution, a matter for political controversy, a catalyst for nation building.
