1560 The History of the Popes (Volume XXXIX) From the German of the Late Ludwig, Freiherr von Pastor, translated by E. F. Peeler (read 14 Apr 1980) I was surprised by some of the things in this volume, which deals roughly with Pius VI's reign up to the French Revolution. For instance Pius VI made a nephew and an uncle Cardinals! I wonder if any Pope since then has made a nephew a Cardinal. Braschi was born 25 Dec 1717 in Cesena. As late as 1753 he was thinking of getting married. He became Cardinal 26 Apr 1773. After 265 ballots, he was elected 15 Feb 1775. Nepotism definitely reared its head in his reign. I am not too impressed by Pius VI--heretofore I had felt he was an OK Pope. His failure to do more for the Jesuits is deplorable. Catherine the Great was the best--she simply insisted on the Jesuits continuing to operate in Russia! In 1782 Pius VI visited Vienna and Munich. The missions really lost ground in his reign, principally because of the loss of the Jesuits. All in all, it was a dark time for the Church. ( )
