This book assumes that the reader already knows enough about Linux to have a Red Hat Linux system installed and running on his computer. It will also be helpful if the reader knows something about the command line and system administration. And it will really be helpful if the reader knows how to compile Linux programs.

The packages on the CD-ROM that comes bundled with the book were tested on Red Hat 6.

The first part of this book is devoted to built-in features of Linux that you might not know about to make things run faster, easier, and better or to do advanced system management tasks.

The second part of this book -- most of the book -- is about the free software packages that you can install from the enclosed CD-ROM that will give your Linux system added functionality. The applications range from games and servers to home entertainment centers and a full-featured office suite.
