McSweeney's Issue 19, our first issue of 2006, turns toward earlier and equally uncertain years, traveling back by way of pamphlets, info-cards, and letters addressing bygone conflicts and still-constant concerns. Expect, among other recovered works, carefree strategies for insurgencies in Nicaragua, astrological advice for the Nixon/Agnew campaigner, sanguine guidance for the soldier stationed in the Middle East at mid-century, and commonsense reinforcement for the doughboy drifting toward a gonorrhea infection. Inside a cigar box adorned with images of war, is a collection of pamphlets from various sources and times that one imagines a soldier might have in his footlocker. Many of the items are reproductions of actual Department of Defense publications, such as a 1957 pocket Guide to the Middle East, air raid instructions, recruiting cards, what to do should an invasion happen on US soil, and a manual on nuclear fallout protection. Among other items are character building primers, personal and official correspondence, Communist Party pamphlets, mission briefings, an ad for Civil War pension eligibility, George W. Bush's military dental record, and a horoscope booklet on how those of each sign can help the Republican Party win!
Hidden at the bottom is the actual book of new fiction writing. It's highlighted by T. C. Boyle's amazing novella, "Wild Child," which fictionalizes the real story of a feral child, abandoned to the French forest in the late 1700s, and the attempts to rehabilitate him as he became an object of fascination in Parisian society.
