Το κλασικό αυτό έργο αποτελεί ουσιαστική θεώρηση της αρχαίας ελληνικής ιστορίας και του ελληνικού πολιτισμού από τα προϊστορικά χρόνια ώς τη ρωμαϊκή κατάκτηση. Εκδόθηκε για πρώτη φορά το 1922, μετά το θάνατο του συγγραφέα του, καθηγητή της Ιστορίας, Τζωρτζ Ουίλλις Μπότσφορντ. Το 1936 κυκλοφόρησε σε ριζικά αναθεωρημένη έκδοση από τον καθηγητή της Ιστορίας Τσαρλς Αλεξάντερ Ρόμπινσον. Η ελληνική μετάφραση έγινε από την αγγλική 5η έκδοση (1969), την οποία έχει αναθεωρήσει ο γνωστός ιστορικός Ντόναλντ Κάγκαν, καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κορνέλ των ΗΠΑ.

Καθώς η έρευνα για την προϊστορική εποχή στον ελληνικό χώρο έχει προχωρήσει τα τελευταία χρόνια με γοργό ρυθμό, η ελληνική έκδοση του έργου συμπληρώθηκε με ένα ενημερωτικό κεφάλαιο (μαζί με τη σύγχρονη βιβλιογραφία) για την Εποχή του Λίθου και του Χαλκού στην Ελλάδα, το οποίο υπογράφει ο διακεκριμένος ερευνητής της ελληνικής προϊστορίας καθηγητής Νικόλαος Πλάτων.
