Un Vague reflet dans une vitre apprend à Raoul Cérusier que les 'employés du' service des permis B.O.B. ne se moquent pas de lui en affirmant qu'il ne ressemble pas à ses photos.. C'est vrai : il a subitement changé de visage. Par contre, son corps, sa voix sont les mêmes. Il faut aviser, gagner du temps pour trouver un moyen de faire admettre cette métamorphose à sa femme Renée, â ses amis, à sa secrétaire Lucienne, et reprendre sa place au foyer conjugal sans qu'ils crient au fou ou à I'assassin. Un mouchoir opportunément déployé lui permet de se munir d'argent et d'expliquer, à sa disparition soudaine par un départ impromptu pour Bucarest. Ainsi paré, enfin capable de goûter le plaisir d'avoir' une figure aimable (le regard des femmes le lui dit), il décide de séduire Renée. Ensuite, il fera passer pour mort le Cérusier de Bucarest et n'aura plus qu'à épouser sa veuve. Simple? Très, et agréable de surcroît, à ceci près que la, solitude pèse à Roland Colbert, ex-Cérusier, et qu'il n'y a pas d'enchantement qui n'ait de fin : l'aventure aura un dénouement tout terrestre et fort inattendu.
