Bears is a simple informational text about, as you may guess, bears. Each page, or spread of two pages, is filled with a large and attractive photograph of a bear, accompanied with a text box filled with one to three simple sentences. The book begins by proffering some basic facts that can apply to all or most bears, and the latter half of the book focuses on particular bear species, giving very basic facts for each one. The sentences are appropriately straightforward and basic to encourage emerging readers, and the photographs are large and colorful, thus sure to be appealing. The book also includes two sidebars with amusing facts about bears. I would have preferred a slight organizational structure, such as introductory sentences to clearly explain that the first part is general information and the second part transitions into specific bear types. I understand that the editors wanted to simplify, but a couple of basic hooks or conclusions wouldn't have pushed the reading level too high. Also, the pictures are very nice, but a little boring in the constant use of full page spreads. I am just spoiled by DK's phenomenal presentation of nonfiction material for all age levels. Comparisons aside, this book is a nice package of easily digestible facts about bears that is appropriate for early readers. ( )
