I have read both the 3rd and 4th editions of this text and love them both for different reasons. The 3rd edition has a lot of ideas and activities that you can immediately put in place in your classroom. The 4th edition, however, contains a lot more theory about the evolution of English education. Both are phenomenal, both should be on your shelf. ( ) The English Teachers Companion, is just that. It gives examples from real life classroom situations and teaches the reader how to deal with those situations. It focuses on many things from research on literacy to ways to consider gender in instruction. This is a very useful book for future and current English teachers. It gives example of activities and even advice for new teachers. This book covers everything a secondary teacher should know. Jim Burke's companion for English teachers would seem to be an indispensable aid to secondary teachers of English literature and composition. It has certainly been an interesting and eye-opening read for someone like me who is considering a career change into teaching. Some of the chapters are, of course, better than others, and he might push his other books a little too often. These are minor quibbles, however. Burke has clearly read widely and deeply in education as well as the literature we teach. I recommend it highly. no reviews | add a review
