He got off his horse, Duke, & watered him with a pan from the back of his pack. After he put the pan away, he looked over the valley. After traveling a while it looked like Placid was within sight. He shot some red squirrels & put them in his possible bag. That night he looked at the stars & heard a few shots in the distance. Then fell asleep for the night. He rode toward a house in the distance, & noticed 2 other riders doing the same.
Pres Conboy was hurrying Red along, then jerked his horse. Red Williams handled his .44 lightly. Today they were only supposed to shake Edwards up. When challenged, Edwards brought up the fact that the land was the government's. His face flushed. Another rider stopped at the well. He didn't have a gun, but had his hand on his rifle. Pres Conboy introduced himself as the forman at the Skull. The rider, Reno, knew he was on their range. After Conboy & Red left, Edwards offered to water Reno's horse. Reno left the horse drink a little. Reno expected Conboy & Williams to be back. The older man knew it too. Miss Edwards was sorry that Reno couldn't stay to help. Reno gave Duke another chance at the water. As Reno left the Circle M, he realized that there had been a time when he would have felt obliged to stay. ( )
