England, 1810: When Lady Gabriella Banning receives word that her half-brother, the Earl of Wickham, has died on his tea plantation in Ceylon, she faces the reality that she and her younger sisters, Claire and Elizabeth, are suddenly penniless. The family's riches will pass to the next male heir -- a distant cousin -- and the Banning sisters are doomed unless Gabby thinks fast. Which she does. Pretending that Marcus is still alive, Gabby arranges beautiful Claire's London season. She'll keep up the pretense just long enough for Claire to marry a fabulously wealthy nobleman. But when a handsome gentleman arrives at the door and claims to be Marcus, Gabby's plan backfires. For if she exposes this mysterious stranger's deceit, she exposes her own. Bound by secrets and lies, Gabby and the roguish adventurer strike sparks off each other -- and soon London society is abuzz over the scandalous pair of "siblings" who appear to be falling in love.... With this beautifully rendered romance, bestselling author Karen Robards begins a sweeping series about three unforgettable sisters poised to take the ton by storm.… (more)

My original review of the audiobook was so tepid that I never re-read it; my tastes in romance have changed since then, and now this book is right up my alley!!! Plain, spinster heroine with a limp. Dashing, teasing hero with a secret, they're forced together, angst and misunderstanding and hotness ensue. This had SO MANY of the things I adore: a heroine that is a bit insecure about her plain looks (which she is frequently reminded of by others); who is embarrassed by her limp; who is resigned to her spinster status and focuses on launching her beautiful sister; who has nightmares from the trauma that led to her injury - an attempted rape; misunderstandings and mistrust and angst over another woman. These all set her up to be soothed and championed and healed and protected by the hero. I enjoyed the mystery of the hero as well. This is going down as a favorite. (4.5 stars) ( )

Very good read that is (unfortunately) based on love at first sight. Also dead wife who is not dead. ( )

I really enjoyed Scandalous by Karen Robards. The writing was excellent, loved the hero and heroine, the plot was good and moved along and a nice ending. It wasn't quite a 5 for me, but close! ( )

I Loved the Banning Sisters, especially Gabrielle. I thought that Nick needed a bit more development. I listened to the Scandalous as an Audio book and I loved both the story line and the reader/narrator. Gabrielle deserved to be loved and cherished and you won't be disappointed. I'd like to listen to Irresistable if I can find it at my library.

Epigraph
Dedication
First words
The earl of Wickham, handsome, rich, and only thirty-one, smiled in anticipation as he scanned the lush green landscape for his quarry. A telltale movement in the brush, a gesture from a servant, and the earl jerked his gun to his shoulder. A shot exploded, the sound reverberating with shattering suddenness through the shimmering waves of heat that were, at the moment, baking the island paradise that was Ceylon. It did not come from the earl's gun.
