A "coffee table" book featuring lovely pictures of Hadrian's Wall and surrounding countryside, which follows the 117km walking route from Bowness-On-Solway in the West to Wallsend in the East.
The accompanying text provides a condensed, though informative, overview of the history of the wall, and the efforts that have been made to preserve and restore this iconic landmark. ( )

First words
When one considers the sheer size and scale of the Roman Empire during the first and second centuries AD, a small group of islands whose southern coastline was just visible across the English Channel could well have been deemed a superfluous trifle; scarcely worth the hazard and expense of a sea-borne invasion simply for the sake of adding another province to an already burgeoning and diverse international portfolio.
