Carrere experienced the "Christmas" tsunami in Sri Lanka; a couple he had met there lost their only child to the wave. That as the first loss he examines; his partner's sister soon dies young, claimed by cancer. He then delves into her life and family, and into his own relationship with the people he interviews. This book is really about love, and it is an excellent essay on love through the stories of people who weather these deaths. I can't imagine the day when I awaken with, "What I really need is a book in which a 'tsunami sweeps a child out to sea', 'a woman dies from cancer, leaving her husband and small children bereft', mixed with details about the daily workings and application of the law in the courtroom of a civil magistrate in Vienne." But these are the matters center stage in the book I finished this morning. I am not a connoisseur of memoirs. I would bet that most do not deal primarily with "Lives Other Than" the author's. But the stories Carrère tells about these other lives are the entré to the story of his own life: the other lives inhabit the foreground, his own life, the background. It is a delicate balancing act for sure given the nature of loss and grief that he recounts but also must co-opt to mold into a memoir--his memoir. I can see why for some readers, Carrère's strategy fails, even does a kind of violence to the material which he tethers together. Memoirs can also fail because some readers find themselves simply not liking the consciousness being rendered. For me, it works. The tales of loss help me to understand exactly what is lost and what remains. Carrère is one of the ones left standing who might tell this tale. And as he does tell it, he feels what those who have been in the wings but never center stage must feel: "Life has spared me such unhappiness and will I pray continue to do so." no reviews | add a review
