A good deal of this volume of collected history articles is taken up by the number of articles dealing with "How I saved Washington for the Federals" controversy as a great many people saw this period as their big contribution to the war. Illustrated and all in all, a fun read. But it's not gospel as regards accuracy, but useful for colour. Originating in 1886 the collection is full of maps, and has a fair amount of wheat among several bushels of Chaff. no reviews | add a review

Battles and Leaders of the Civil War is recognized as the outstanding history of the War between the States to come out of the 19th century. THis series was originally conceived in 1883 by the editors of Century Company, who set out to provide an accurate, unbiased account of the war. It was authored by the commanders and their subordinates from both the Confederate and Union forces who actually fought, planned or were eyewitnesses to the events they describe therein. Volume 1 begins with a view of Washington on the eve of the war, gives an account of the fall of Fort Sumter, the preperations for war in the North and South, and the formation of the Confederacy. the Lew Wallace piece on Ft Donelson. Excellent details on the tactical situation during the battle. He really knows how to turn a phrase.
Col Snead paper on the first year of the war in Missouri. He is quite the clever writer, and seems to have good insight into the on the ground situation. I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of wisdom about major players at the time.
Article by BG Imboden was very informative regarding artillery. esp sizes of guns and results of firing.
Read the article by Albert Sidney Johnson's son, found it very biased but gave some good insight into the battle of Shiloh.
