The cult classic is back?for fans who like their vampire hunters hard-boiled. You don't just kill vampires for the money?you do it for the satisfaction. You do it because somebody has to. You do it no matter what it does to you. And you drink?a lot. Some jobs just suck. This one bites. But nobody does it better than Jack Crow, the leader of VAMPIRE$ Inc. His crack team of hunters takes down the blood suckers with a lethal combination of cojones and crossbows. After members of Jack's team are ambushed and slaughtered, however, the survivors need to rethink their strategy. With a new recruit from the Vatican? a priest who's not afraid to wield a stake?and a sharpshooter loaded up with silver bullets, it's payback time. caimanjosh: Any fan of Lumley's vampire novels will likely enjoy Steakley's excellent "Vampire$" as well. These vampires aren't equivocating, soul-searching, angst-ridden entities with vampiric powers. They're incredibly powerful, dangerous, evil monsters who must be destroyed at all costs.… (more)

I read this after watching Carpenter's somewhat enjoyable film version, and I have to say that this is one of the better modern vampire novels I have ever read! Funny and Thrilling as well as original and innovative, definitely worth a look.

The characters are portrayed so narrowly that they don't seem human. Too bad that wasn't the point of the book. The female characters are by far the most embarrassing. Just call the love interest "Madonna" if you're going to write a cut-out like that. ( )

Book description
VAMPIRE HUNTERS
Suppose there really were vampires.
Dark. Stalking. Destroying.
They'd have to be killed, wouldn't they?
Of course they would.
But what kind of fools would try to make a living at it?
