I purchased this book back in 1998 because I already owned half a dozen albums by its author and was, and remain, intrigued by musician / authors (such as Kinky Freidman, Willy Vlautin and Steve Earle.)
I have only just got around to reading it and was disappointed. Set in an area I know well, West London, it is a tale of low lifes on the edge of criminality, but lacks realistic characters. There are a few good lines, but I cannot envisage it lingering in my memory. I think there is another Spencer somewhere on my shelves, but I don't think it will get on my reading pile anytime soon.
