Følelsesladede innlegg for og mot Hamsun sto høyt i kurs hos landets redaktører. Boken omhandler derfor Hamsuns lesere og den debatten de førte. De handler om deres reaksjoner i det aller mest hektiske Hamsun-tiåret, hva debatt om hans nazisympatier og dikterferdigheter angår (1945-1955).
