Based on the Nickelodeon cartoon and adapted by Mickie Matheis, it is the introductory book in Ni Hao, Kai-lan series. It lists the Chinese words (along with their English translation) that kids will encounter in the story and preparing them for the new language they are going to experience for maybe the first time in print. Vibrant illustrations by Jason Fruchter and Aka Chikasawa, kids will immediately notice the bright colors and pleasant settings in the book. It is an entertaining journey teaching kids some very basic Chinese words, creative arts and craft ideas, and how to handle adverse moments. In this case one of Kai'lan's friends is upset when his idea is copied. Kids will learn how to handle their anger in such a situation, while experience a microcosm of Chinese culture. Educational and entertaining for all young children, especially pre-K. ( )
