Photographing railways in the former Iron Curtain countries was always a bit of a problem; in East Germany it was positively and strictly forbidden. Photographers risked arrest for espionage and the confiscation of their cameras and film. Günther Meyer was a railwayman who flouted this law and has provided us with an archive of railway photographs of the 1950s and 1960s which accurately portray the grimy reality of East Germany.

The risk to Meyer was real. Who would have thought that in the Britain of the early 21st century, photographing railways could attract a similar fate at the hands of a new totalitarian regime? ( )
