Considering that Diderot's Jacques le fataliste et son maitre is one of my all time favorite books, I am disappointed to feel so lukewarm about this one. Le Neveu de Rameau takes the form of a dialog between "Moi" (the philosopher) & "Lui" (Rameau's nephew, a "fool" one might say who supports himself by amusing his various bourgeois benefactors). There is much (too much perhaps) about personages of the time (mid 18th century) as well as discussion of artistic (particularly musical), philosophical & moral matters. I suspect that what makes Le Neveu so much less satisfying than Jacques le fataliste is its lack of "event." The dialoguing protagonists go nowhere & do nothing in the course of their conversation. They are installed in a corner of a bar-cafe while around them other men drink, play chess & apparently ignore one another --this despite the fact that Lui at times becomes quite loud & demonstrative while engaging in elaborate pantomines. He is the 18th c. French version of a contemporary stand-up comedian. ( )
