Being a disorganized grabbag of anecdote concerning the fortunes of the Chicago White Sox, principally during the final quarter of the last century and the first decade of our own. To me, the lack of chronological, or any other, organization is slightly offputting, but I suppose that doesn't really matter in a book which is informative and depends heavily upon the reminiscences of individuals who were there at the time. I also wish that he had included more from the older years which I am more interested in, but, again, the author was a beat writer who drew upon sources that he knew. The Black Sox get a quick chapter, and older players show up when he enumerates Hall of Famers, but this is mostly for fans of the team around the turn of the century. ( ) no reviews | add a review
Genuine fans take the best team moments with the less than great, and know that the games that are best forgotten make the good moments truly shine. This monumental book of the Chicago White Sox documents all the best moments and personalities in the history of the team, but also unmasks the regrettably awful and the unflinchingly ugly. In entertaining--and unsparing--fashion, this book sparkles with White Sox highlights and lowlights, from wonderful and wacky memories to the famous and infamous. Such moments include the magical run to the 2005 World Series title, as well as the notorious "Black Sox Scandal" that rocked the foundation of the sport. Whether providing fond memories, goose bumps, or laughs, this portrait of the team is sure to appeal to the fan who has been through it all. No library descriptions found. |
