Sully was an Air Force fighter pilot flying F-4D Phantoms…that’s kind of remarkable. He holds an Airline Transportation Pilot Certificate…that’s like being one person 1 in 2000. He piloted U.S. Airways airliners for 30 years. He’s been married to Lorrie for 34 years. And Sully landed his Airbus 320 in the Hudson River six minutes after take-off from LaGuardia Airport when both engines were disabled by a flock of geese…and not one person died. He comes across as remarkably normal, but don’t believe it. After seeing the movie, I expected the book to have much more about the flight and the subsequent investigations. In truth, there's much more about Sullenberger's life prior to the flight in the book. Which is naturally what you'd expect in a book such as this, but not really what I wanted to read about. The movie makes it sound like there was quite a bit of controversy about his actions in the subsequent investigations. In truth, Sullenberger mentions an NTSB investigation once in the whole book. I have no complaints with the parts of the book that describe the flight itself - they are very well done with lots of details. I'm really not interested in reading about how his daughters grades dropped after he became public figure, or that his wife thinks she should lose some weight. Never has a non-fiction book kept me reading like this. Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger managed to write up this beautiful book of a event that captured everyone's mind on a January in 2009. "There were 155 people on that plane who got to go home. I must never lose sight of the fact that I was one of them. I've seen two documentaries and a Hollywood made movie (which is based on this book) about this famous forced water landing. I have seen about every possible air crash investigation documentary and this one stays with me always. The miracle of everyone getting out of this alive just makes me so happy. Having read Sully's story now I'm not surprised that he was able to do this difficult landing. He talks about all the lessons that he learned in life before this fateful 15th of January. All of those prepared him to do the best. He is so professional and focused about his job that it makes me jealous. I want to be as good as a person as he is. Sully is an inspiration from who we can all learn from.
Thanks to meticulous attention to white-knuckle detail by Sully, writing with Jeffrey Zaslow, "Highest Duty" doesn't lose thrust just because we already know its outcome (even if the writing style can be as methodical as one of Sully's checklists). Distinctions
