Het leven van Spinoza (Baruch d.Espinoza; 1632 te Amsterdam geboren, 1677 te 't Gravenhage gestorven) is door slechts een enkele opzienbarende gebeurtenis in zijn rustigen gang gestoord: op drie-en-twintig-jarigen leeftijd werd hij uit de Joodsche kerkgemeenschap verbannen, en door een Joodsch ijveraar met den dood bedreigd.
