Mouchette (Nortier), una quattordicenne povera e maltrattata dal padre, viene violentata da un bracconiere. Morta la madre e vittima dei pettegolezzi del paese, si lascia cadere nel fiume quasi per gioco. Da Nuova storia di Mouchette di Georges Bernanos è, come Au hasard Balthazar, la storia di una vittima predestinata alla sofferenza da un oscuro volere divino, cui resta solo la vergogna e l'orgoglio. L'unico commento che Bresson fa al suo calvario è il Magnificat di Monteverdi nell'ultima scena: il suo stile depurato ma tesissimo non ha nessun cedimento, anche se l'origine letteraria si fa sentire di più che in altre occasioni.
