Nel 1942, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il '918 gruppo bombardieri' dell'VIII Corpo Aereo americano si trova in crisi in seguito allo sforzo immane cui è stato sottoposto. Il comandante, colonnello Kid, viene sostituito da Frank, un giovane generale, cui è affidato il compito di ristabilire l'ordine. Frank, inizialmente osteggiato dai piloti, riesce ad imporsi. Messo a dura prova i propri nervi, il giovane generale è vittima di un grave collasso. Lo sostituirà nel comando l'ex vice comandante, un maggiore, che ha un recente passato di eroismo.
