Not surprisingly Laura Kinsale hits another home run with this book (her OBP must be phenomenal! :). The protags are all kinds of good fun. Trev is charming and mischievous, Callie is funny and resourceful, and watching the two of them in their livestock-related escapades is hilarious. I laughed out loud reading this book and can't wait to go back and read all my favorite lines. Fulfilling regency. It was lighter not totally full of angst as LK's books can be but there was an angsty element. The hero who made good but not in the way he wanted to so he felt a failure. I really liked that they had been childhood sweethearts and that they had always pined for each other. In fact I would have enjoyed it had the book started when they were young. This was one of the most realistic portrayals of premarital sex of most any historical I've read. Even though they didn't go all the way, it was shown how young people get carried away physically. They always have and they always will. A light hearted amusing story without being so goofy it's unrealistic. I loved the hero. At age twenty-seven, having been jilted by three different fiances, Callista Taillefaire believes her chances for love and marriage are past. Into her life steps Trevelyn Davis d'Augustin, Duc de Monceaux, whose family had escaped from France just before the revolution there. As a child, Callie had received French lesson's from Trev's mother and sister, and lessons of a different sort from Trev, the man she counts as her first love. Having been in France trying to re-acquired his family's estate and wealth after the fall of Napolean, Trev is back in England to care for his ill mother. Trev's shadowy past follows him to Callie's quiet village, bringing adventure, intrigue and romance to all who care for him. Callie is a delightful heroine: quirky and clever and fun. Trevelyn is the perfect gentleman-rascal. To accompany the bevy of strong and interesting characters, Kinsale has written witty banter, spot-on historical references, and complications to the romance that seem nearly irresolvable. This is a charming novel certain to please every reader. no reviews | add a review
