A good example of biography because this book documents Clara Barton's life chronologically and factually. Written in an early chapter book format, this biography begins with a short statement of who Barton was and then when and where she was born. Barton was always a hospitable person and enjoyed school. Barton began as a nurse early in her adolescence when she cared for a horribly sick brother. She taught children in a one-room school house, then went back to school herself, opened schools, and found various ways to contribute to the war effort, sometimes despite resistance because of her gender. Although this book never said which side of the Civil War she contributed to, she did live in the north, but chance are she was there to help people, not one side in particular. When mourning families were unsure whatever happened to their loved one after the war, Barton helped locate missing soldiers--tens of thousands of them. Barton traveled after the war and helped at the Red Cross organization in Switzerland. When she returned to the states she started and became president of the American Red Cross. This brought aid to many people. One single sentence mentioned her work for women's rights. Her life was clearly well-lived. This book can help others see what they can do for humanity.
