This is a fun story children's picture book about a homeless dog named Maxi who gets adopted by a taxi driver named Jim. It chronicles their adventures and the many interesting characters that they meet every day. The book is a poem and utilizes rhyme and rhythm to keep the story flowing. The illustrations are very colorful and bright paintings. They help create a warm feeling in the reader as they fall in love with Maxi and Jim. The theme of this book is friendship and fun and how this dog was lucky to find a good friend and how they are there for each other. Teachers could discuss animals who get adopted or even children who are adopted and how they find their new families. Teachers could also talk about different jobs that use animals like policemen and have kids write a story about that animal and their owner on the job. ( )

The Adventures of Taxi Dog by Debra and Sal Barracca

In this realistic fiction book, a taxi driver named Jim befriends a homeless dog. He gives the dog an home and food and names him Maxi. Jim takes Maxi along with him in his taxi around New York City. The two meet lots of interesting people that they carry around the city.

I think this a great story because it could happen. It gives a new perspective on riding in a taxi. It is also great to have the dog riding too. I have ridden in a taxi one time and the pictures and descriptions are quite accurate of what New York City is like only the buildings are taller.

I would use this story with Pre-K through 2nd grade when trying to give students an idea of what a big city is like. We could do a KWL chart. We could talk about what we know about big cities like Chicago, LA, NYC etc. We could then look at books about things that happen in large cities in books and magazines. Then add what we have learned after finishing each book. ( )
