I enjoy this series, but I must confess it seems to be drawn out a little to much on the trouble between Cary and Jace. With so many wonderful characters to choose from, the author could have continued the story but focused on other characters, still this is one of my favorite series. ( )

Wish I'd known this was the first of three more books in this series. Definitely would've waited to continue reading them. Oy.... ( )

Clary, Simon, Jace, Isabelle, and the rest are back with some new characters not found in the three earlier books of The Mortal Instruments series. Someone is killing Shadowhunters and causing tension between Downworlders and Shadowhunters. Someone is also trying to kill Simon who is adjusting to being a vampire. He is also a Daylighter and bears the Mark of Cain which protects him from attack. Even though he still loves Clary, Simon is dating both Isabelle and Maia, a werewolf. Jace is pulling away from Clary and she does not know why. Clary’s Mom and Luke are getting married and many of the supernaturals are invited to the wedding. Full of action, adventure, romance, and new twists, fans who have enjoyed the series thus far will not be disappointed in this volume with fully developed and likeable characters. ( )

Still loving this series. This book dropped a star for me as I'm here for the action and this was more character-led (not that it was a problem, but the previous books had their characters develop in the midst of the action). Love Simon. Really liked Jordan too, I'm looking forward to seeing where his story leads. And ooh, that ending. I've started book five now. ( )

3.5 stars out of 5.

There are sicknesses that walk in darkness; and there are exterminating angels, that fly wrapt up in the curtains of immateriality and an uncommunicating nature; whom we cannot see, but feel their force, and sink under their sword. -Jeremy Taylor, "A Funeral Sermon"

Book description
The Mortal War is over, and sixteen-year-old Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She’s training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And—most importantly of all—she can finally call Jace her boyfriend.

But nothing comes without a price.

Someone is murdering Shadowhunters, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second, bloody war. Clary’s best friend, Simon, can’t help her—his mother just found out that he’s a vampire, and now he’s homeless. When Jace begins to pull away from her without explaining why, Clary is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: she herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.
