Fiction. Poetry. HTML:

One of the most influential volumes of poetry of the nineteenth century, Charles Baudelaire's The Flowers of Evil caused a sensation when it was originally published, even earning Baudelaire a fine when he was charged with "insulting public decency." With strong themes of debauchery, decadence, hedonism and sensuality, these intoxicating verses will etch themselves in your memory.

The vocabulary is such that I almost feel like I'm reading a foreign language I'm not yet fluent in. It was a little difficult to get through without the use of a dictionary, but once you understand, some of the poems break your heart beautifully.

The atmosphere is very reminiscent of Christina Sng's Nightmares and Dreamscapes. ( )

From Paris to the stars to the depths of ones splenetic imagination the reader feels the power of this verse compilation. Whether there has ever been anything like it does not matter as even in our later age the poems strike deep and hard inside our humanity. Love and death and the dregs of desire that cannot be imagined and yet appears here in the verse of the great one - Baudelaire. ( )

Excellent although truncated illustrated edition of Baudelaire’s masterpiece. Large format is decorated with excellent black and white Deco/Decadent illustrations by [a:Beresford Egan|7212540|Beresford Egan|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]. Cover is a sort of op-art green glitter swirl that no photo does justice to. Leather binding. Limited and Numbered. A real book as art object sort of thing.

The poems are rendered into prose which is my preferred format for poetry translation (or otherwise free verse). There is just no other way to get a poet’s nuance when going from one language to another. Any translator that adds the constraint of making a translation rhyme is doomed to lose more meaning than with a good prose translation.

I’m not going to attempt a review of the poems themselves. Much better minds than mine have already done a better job than I could do. Suffice it to say that any devotee of the weird, Decadent, and horrible will enjoy. ( )

Unless you've graduated from the school
of Satan (devil of a pedagogue!)
the poems will be Greek to you, or else
you'll set me down for one more raving fool.

Book description
