I thoroughly enjoyed this book of short stories. The twists in some of the stories make them really enjoyable, especially if you have a dark sense of humour. ( )

I did not realise that when I picked this book up it was a collection of short stories, so it was a welcome surprise. More so by the fact I enjoyed it so much. ( )

An enjoyable collection of 16 short stories that give an insight into aspects of Gale's novels, including stories based in Cornwall (farming and music making), British public schools (although from the father's perspective), naturist holiday camps and prisons.
There are a couple of supernatural stories which read as if they have been written to illustrate how a ghost story might be written in a contemporary setting, that do not work for me as the 'shock' technique feels passe, but they are compensated for by those, 'Saving Space' and 'Petals on a Pool', where the supernatural element works, even though sentimental.
I was fortunate to hear Patrick Gale reading from 'Cookery' and 'Gentleman's Relish', so these are the strongest stories for me, as I can still hear his voice and they could be semi-autobiographical. ( )
