Twelve-year-old Remember Patience Whipple ("Mem" for short) has just arrived in the New World with her parents after a grueling 65-day journey on the Mayflower. Mem has an irrepressible spirit, and leaps headfirst into life in her new home. Despite harsh conditions, Mem is fearless. This is one of those excellent crossover books that was written for children but equally enjoyable for adults. The social History of the 1600's is well expressed and you are able to gain a quick snapshot which would not be so easily gained from a historical tomb. ( )

I read this whole series as they were being published. These are great for girls who have outgrown the American Girl series but still have an interest in reading about young women who lived in difference places and times. ( )

"A Journey to the New World, the Diary of Remember Patience Whipple," is a two part dairy of a young girl who with her family and others traveled across seas in hopes of new lands for religious freedom. The first part of Remember's diary tells the story of sailing 2950 miles on the Mayflower in the Atlantic Ocean. The second part of Remember's diary tells of struggles and joys of beginning life in the New World. ( )

Book description
Nov 6, 1620
2,950 miles sailed

"Land ahoy!"
The call from the crow's nest cracked the dawn. Hummy's and my eyes flew open ... we all hurried out. Unable to believe the words, our eyes wide in the half-light of dawn. Several of us crowded along the rail. the sailors saw it first, the faint, dark line against the horizon ... But within minutes of searching the horizon with our eyes, Hummy and I began to see the same.
We held each other's hands so tightly and almost dared not breath, but minute by minute, the line became firmer and began to thicken. Twas not a wisp of a dream but real. It has taken us all of sixty-five days, but finally we are here. This be the New World and it doth fill my eyes for the first time.
