In Naked, David Sedaris's message alternately rendered in Fakespeare, Italian, Spanish, and pidgin Greek is the same: pay attention to me.

Whether he's taking to the road with a thieving quadriplegic, sorting out the fancy from the extra-fancy in a bleak fruit-packing factory, or celebrating Christmas in the company of a recently paroled prostitute, this collection of memoirs creates a wickedly incisive portrait of an all-too-familiar world. It takes Sedaris from his humiliating bout with obsessive behavior in "A Plague of Tics" to the title story, where he is finally forced to face his naked self in the mirrored sunglasses of a lunatic. At this soulful and moving moment, he picks potato chip crumbs from his pubic hair and wonders what it all means.

This remarkable journey into his own life follows a path of self-effacement and a lifelong search for identity, leaving him both under suspicion and overdressed.

I had heard so much about how hilarious David Sedaris was I bought this book. A good deal of this book was far from hilarious to me, and made me feel sad instead. I just can’t laugh at a child with undiagnosed OCD whose teacher ends up drinking with his mother in the kitchen while said mother does impressions of her sons various mannerisms. That having been said, some of the later chapters were amusing and there were a couple of laugh out loud lines. I am obviously no constituted to read these types of books, as all of Carrie Fisher’s “hilarious “ writing made me sad as well ( )

Sedaris is always good and this is no exception, especially the first few essays. I had a greek grandmother so some were extra relatable. ( )

This book covers a lot of Sedaris's life, including his extreme OCD as a youth, which was cured by taking up smoking, something in his case I can totally support. We hear all about his miserly father and mother's alcoholism--after which she gets terminal cancer. The book concludes with the author's visit to a nudist camp. What makes Sedaris readable (or listenable in the case of this audiobook ready by him and his sister Amy) is not just that he finds the humor and irony in every situation, but that he also finds the truth. Put simply this is another of David's hilarious memoirs filled with outrageous characters, situations and commentary. If you've yet to read his stories, do yourself a favor and indulge. Whether his family, friends or neighbors, he invites the unusual into his life in ways never imagined! ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
For my sister Lisa
First words
I'm thinking of asking the servants to wax my change before placing it in the Chinese tank I keep on my dresser.
Quotations
Every gathering has its moment. As an adult, I distract myself by trying to identify it, dreading the inevitable downswing that is sure to follow. The guests will repeat themselves one too many times, or you'll run out of dope or liquor and realize that it was all you ever had in common.
If nothing else, life in the suburbs promised that you might go from day to day _without_ finding shit in your hair.
